For my research project, I am wanting to learn more about cyber-security in the healthcare industry. With a lot of outdated operating systems in healthcare, patient's health data is at risk. Also, the recent push to make all healthcare records digital is exposing many devices that are exploitable.
According to a healthcare report done by Sans, "Some 94 percent of medical institutions said their organizations have been victims of a cyber attack" (page 4). I want to research how the digitalization
of healthcare records in making private data exploitable, how company's are fighting back against threats, and what the future of cyber-security in healthcare looks like.

Research Proposal: FDA (Food Drug Administration)
This topic idea just happened to flow in to my mind when I was thinking about the German E Commission, an European governmental agency that regulates on herbs, drugs, and medicine. Just like the FDA in the U.S., except that the FDA does not only involved in promoting safety to our medicine but also to our food. In general, the FDA is a U.S.A federal agency that is responsible of securing and controlling our food safety and public concerns. I found it fascinating on how such system operate and regulates, that numerous questions arises in my mind and I question myself: how does the FDA works, how do they approve certain food, how do drugs are certified, how do they penalized, how much power do they hold, and etc.
Although the FDA function and operation is not the only thing I want to research on, I, in additional wanted to know the difference between how FDA operate versus outside the U.S. Because I heard rumors and read articles in regard to FDA regulation, an overall review commented that the FDA agency is lacking and is unregulated. I want to see what cause this up rise in indignation. It makes me wonder is there is a way to improve our FDA and bring a better satisfaction to our community?

Research Proposal Idea: Using AI/robotics in Healthcare
I'm interested in learning more about using robotics and AI in healthcare systems. Japan is one of the countries actively exploring this field to tackle the aging population. For example, they use robotics and AI to provide companionship and care for the elderly. Many leading companies are exploring AI capabilities by using them to detect cancer, remote surgery, telemedicine, etc.
I would like to research more in depth how countries all over the world incorporate AI into their healthcare system, as well as the benefits and challenges with information security or privacy, while using the method of the alternative healthcare.

Research Ideas
For my research paper, I have a few ideas that I would like to be its topics
The first proposal would be mobile health. But a more refined topic would be mobile health regarding smart watches and their applications. How they are able to record so much data throughout the day really interests me. What the company does with this data would be something I would look into. How these companies come up with the technology that can differentiate between sitting, standing, walking, running, sprinting, and even sleeping amazes me.
Another topic would be crispr. I have seen a few videos on what crispr can do and what that could do for the rest of humanity. I would be interesting researching this topic and finding out how it began, what stage it is now, and where people plan on taking it.
The last topic I have in mind would be rural health care. In "Escape Fire" this topic was eye opening to me on how we can map out where people need care and instead of them going to the emergency room, mobile health care professionals can come to them and properly treat their illnesses.

One area of interest for me this semester is the idea of patient transparency in the landscape of Electronic Health Records. EHR is now one of the largest expenditures and initiatives in healthcare across the country, yet many healthcare professionals are disapproving of its implementation, and equally concerning is that patients seldom have direct reliable access to the information being collected.
In an era where people have web based monitoring capabilities of their purchasing, investment, and academic histories, why is healthcare making little advancement in this area? Now that our health history is becoming more web-based, I suspect that consumers will become more demanding of not just interoperability of their records, but more importantly direct access to their medical history through web-based portals, communities etc. Essentially, this solution would look something like an Amazon style UI that is used to track vaccination histories, doctors’ visits, dermatology appointments, and more. Some EHR providers like AllScripts and Epic are beginning to offer similar services with the mobile based platforms of FollowMyHealth and MyChart. For my research topic, I'm looking to potentially going into the topic of Big Data and its correlation with Healthcare. Within IT, Big Data is the "new" and upcoming area as it provides companies with advantages over their competitors when they find success or answers within the Big Data.
With my research, I'm going to look into how hospitals and doctors can use big data in a way to improve not only the hospital, their patients, but also research as a whole and the direction that it is going in the future. A potential problem that goes with Big Data is also HIPAA. To what extent are they aloud to get all the information of the data? As this also brings up the issue of privacy data.

Research Proposal Idea
I would like to concentrate my focus for this project on the price discrepancies of healthcare in U.S. vs. another foreign country. Specifically, I would zoom in on the dental care/prices in Tucson vs. the Sonoran (MX) market. Just how much of a discrepancy there is between the three markets of Tucson, Nogales and Hermosillo. I would collect primary data of pricing and respective procedures in these markets
I would also have an interest in creating a survey, collecting its primary data and doing an analysis of local resident views on having dental work done in U.S vs. Sonora (MX). Exploring what price points might be enough to have them make a trip to either Nogales or Hermosillo. Also, framing survey questions with "scare" tactics similar to how propaganda-against-foreign-medicine frames its arguments. Would such a different wording in the questions make a local resident less likely to have dental work in Mexico compared to "non-bias" survey wording? Or would it change their price point (make it lower) before considering such a trip?
