Research Proposal Topic

For my research topic, I'm looking to potentially going into the topic of Big Data and its correlation with Healthcare. Within IT, Big Data is the "new" and upcoming area as it provides companies with advantages over their competitors when they find success or answers within the Big Data.

With my research, I'm going to look into how hospitals and doctors can use big data in a way to improve not only the hospital, their patients, but also research as a whole and the direction that it is going in the future. A potential problem that goes with Big Data is also HIPAA. To what extent are they aloud to get all the information of the data? As this also brings up the issue of privacy data.

  1. Good topic. Data analytics need not be a HIPAA problem unless you are looking at individual patients, which you would not do. Big data in this context is looking at trends, or patient "groups" but not individual patients. It does not mean, however, that hospital admins (and some doctors) won't use that as an excuse to not have access to the data. There are, however, data sites that you may be able to use. We can look into that for you as well. I'll provide the new chapter on this shortly. Also, check out Health Affairs (see Healthcare News Links on the right of the blog), and look at the topic or theme on big data, or just search on the term.
