Research Proposal Ben Ampel

My research proposal is on the idea of how to merge systems between different hospitals. For example, the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale uses a patient data system called CERNER. the V.A. here in Tucson uses CPRS. Other hospitals use EPIC, and that's just locally. If a patient needs to start using a new hospital, it seems the only way to transfer data for that patient is export as a PDF, send to the other hospital, and have the doctor manually enter information. This is incredibly time consuming, and not to mention potentially confusing if the system doesn't output all the information explicitly in an easy-to-read format. There could potentially be a standard created among systems to make the information easily exported into a spreadsheet, and then imported into a new system, but if it does exist, it is not in use between hospitals in Arizona.

  1. Good topic. Interoperability is a big obstacle, but it's done with a pdf (usually). There are certainly problems, but the cloud is one consideration, as is blockchain. But most of it is electronic, so it should not matter the OS of vendor - at least in theory. I would investigate this further. Chapter 5 in our book, which we cover next and some reading in our syllabus (online in D2L) may be revealing. It provides a good history of how we used to think of the problem, so that you can update us on where we are now.

I like your approach to see how it's being used in Arizona (or Tucson) vs. say, Pittsburgh. :)
